Storm Sewer Outfall Discharge Notification

CITY OF FLINT UTILITIES / WATER POLLUTION CONTROL DIVISION

September 22, 2023, 12:45 pm Storm Sewer Outfall Discharge

On September 22, at approximately 12:45 p.m. the City of Flint Sewer Department was notified of an unknown substance discharging from the Stormwater outfall at W. Boulevard (GM Outfall 001) to the Flint River. The discharge lasted until approximately 1:30 p.m. when the flow stopped. Protective booms were in place protecting the river from discharges from the outfall. Nothing collected on the booms. Efforts were made to trace the source of the spill by checking upstream (up pipe). There was no residue of the spill material evident. Local industrial facilities were inspected and the staff interviewed and yielded no evidence of spills to the storm sewer. The source of this discharge is unknown at this time.

City of Flint is working with the Genesee County Health Department. The Genesee County Health Department recommends no recreational activities within the immediate vicinity of the booms.

As a precautionary measure required by law, Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE), Flint Township and Flushing have been notified.
