FLINT, Mich. — Mayor Karen Weaver released the following statement on the death of Federal Judge Damon Keith:
“It is with a very heavy heart that I extend my condolences to the Family of Judge Damon Keith. Judge Keith was a pioneer for civil rights. During the lifetime of his career, Judge Keith held true to the sentiment that was declared at the inception of our great nation, that “We hold these Truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness” and he fought tirelessly to ensure that our country never forget its own words.
While we are preparing to lay the physical body of Judge Keith to rest, his legacy will yet live on. I urge and encourage everyone walking the lands of this great nation to take on his legacy and continue to move in his spirit. We are all able to champion our different causes and paths due to the integrity, grit, honor and tenacity of the amazing trailblazing leader.”
