Holiday Season Officially Underway in Flint

img_1118 December 6, 2016 (FLINT, Mich) — Dozens of Flint residents, community and city leaders gathered on the front lawn of City Hall Friday for the 2016 Tree Lighting and Holiday Kick Off event. Albert Strickland and Cho’Zen, lead the crowd in a medley of carols getting everyone in the holiday spirit. Many people, including Mayor Karen Weaver, said it was a much needed uplifting event.

“It has been a challenging year for the citizens and the City of Flint, but this is an ideal time to come together, be thankful for the progress that has been made and celebrate the holiday season,” said Weaver.

The police and fire chiefs took time to thank the officers and firefighters who serve the Flint community year round and remembered those who gave the ultimate sacrifice and lost their lives in the line of duty.

Once the trees were lit outside, everyone was invited to continue the celebration inside the lobby of City Hall. Residents were able to warm up with hot chocolate and coffee generously donated by Walli’s Family Restaurant and McDonald’s (Linden Rd.). Other tasty treats were available thanks to donations from Meijer, Sam’s Club, Wal-Mart and Tim Horton’s. While sipping and munching on the refreshments, everyone listened to music performed by the Flint Institute of Music’s Dort Honors String Quartet.

The main attraction was Santa’s Corner. Kids got to sit on Santa’s lap and tell him their wish list. The moment was captured by Making Memories Photography Studio and each child was able to take home their photo with St. Nick! This was made possible through the ReCAST Grant which is geared toward children’s outreach. Kids also got to take home stockings stuffed with candy canes and special toy making kits thanks to donations from Patsy Lou Automotive and Home Depot.

The 2016 City of Flint Tree Lighting & Holiday Kick Off was a great time enjoyed by all. Thanks to the Flint community and area businesses for supporting the event and helping us spread some holiday cheer!
