Governing Institute Announces Women in Government Leadership Class of 2019, Mayor Weaver among the Honorees

FLINT, Mich– Mayor Karen Weaver among twenty-five women honored by the Governing Institute. The twenty-five honorees were selected for an annual program to highlight extraordinary elected women and pay it forward to the next generation of women seeking public office.

The Governing Institute announced the selection of 25 elected leaders to the Women in Government Leadership Program Class of 2019. The outstanding women leaders are courageous problem solvers making a difference in the communities they serve and blazing a trail for future women candidates to follow.

“It is truly an honor to be recognized by the Governing Institute, and to be honored among so many other extraordinary women”, said Mayor Weaver. “The work that we do in our communities, we do out of love, love for people and the desire to give back to the cities that made us who we are.  We are all given the opportunity to answer the call to serve, I hope that I am inspiring other young women to answer that call.”

Nominations were received from elected officials, academics, agency staff and Women in Government alumnae throughout the year. The honorees were selected by the Governing Institute based on career and educational accomplishments, personal recommendations, a commitment to actively participate and diversity in class membership. Each cohort includes one rising star — a young woman not yet serving in elected office, but with aspirations to run for office in the future.
