Mayor Sheldon Neeley announces 3-point plan to fight crime in Flint

FLINT, Michigan—Mayor Sheldon Neeley today announced a new plan to fight crime in Flint through a three-point plan that specifically targets gun violence.

Mayor Neeley’s 3-point plan includes:

  • Formation of a new Special Investigative Unit focusing on illegal guns and incorporating tactical expertise to increase interventions
  • A community-wide recruitment effort to help fill long-vacant positions in the City of Flint police department. This recruitment effort is being done in partnership with religious leaders throughout the City.
  • Launching a gun buyback program to get guns off the street. A series of events will be planned as part of the effort.

The announcement comes a month after Mayor Neeley brought together the Michigan State Police, University of Michigan-Flint and Mott Community College with a renewed partnership in the city.
