Choice Neighborhoods Initiative Groundbreaking

FLINT, MI (08/23/19) — The Choice Neighborhoods Initiative in Flint is making huge strides toward neighborhood transformation. Since 2014, the City and Flint Housing Commission have been collaboratively leading a process to relocate Atherton East Townhomes. Atherton East is located in the south east corner of Flint and was identified in the 2013 Imagine Flint Master Plan as a key development to relocate in an effort towards social equity in Flint.

The South Flint Community Plan was written through an inclusive community process. The plan outlines a vision for improved Housing style and location, increased access to recreation and Neighborhood wide improvements, and strategies for People to achieve educational, workforce, and health success. This three-pronged approach to transformation will bring drastic changes to the South Flint neighborhood and the people within it over the course of the City’s 6-year $30 million grant term and beyond.

Housing partner, Norstar Development will construct 4 phases of housing planned in two locations, the City is excited to kick-off phase 1 this summer. This first phase of Housing development includes 62 total units spread across, a 3-story apartment building, townhomes, and single-family attached style buildings. The new housing will be mixed-income; 39 public housing units, 16 affordable units, and 7 market-rate units. Not only is mixed-income a requirement by HUD and other funders, the City’s vision for social equity and increased access to quality neighborhoods supports this type of intentional development.

With over $25 million of investment going into this first phase, it is just the start of truly transformational work happening in Flint.
