FLINT, Mich — Mayor Karen Weaver and city officials joined members of the community Wednesday to recognize Javale McGee. Leaders honored the Flint native and professional basketball player for his accomplishments including helping his NBA team, the Golden State Warriors, win the 2017 NBA Championship.

The festivities began with a parade at 10:00 a.m. from the International Academy of Flint to City Hall. Students from local schools including, Doyle Ryder Elementary and International Academy of Flint participated in the celebration.

JaVale McGee has some encouraging words for the students when he took to the podium on the front lawn of Flint City Hall.

“Believe in yourself even when others don’t,” said McGee. “Don’t let anyone tell you what you can and cannot do.”

McGee also brought along the Golden State Warriors 2017 NBA Championship Trophy for all to see.
