Flint City Officials Announce Mayor’s 2017 Beautification Initiative & Awards

(Flint, Mich)—  Flint Mayor Karen Weaver and her administration have joined with other City officials to launch a new effort to help make the City of Flint more beautiful. The goal of the first annual Mayor’s Beautification Initiative and Awards is to get Flint residents to join together to clean up designated areas around the city and to recognize residents have gone above and beyond to make their home/lawn look its best.

Mayor Weaver is urging the Flint community to team up and adopt sections of Saginaw Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Ave. within the city limits to help keep these highly traveled city streets well maintained. Residents are encouraged to do what they can to help ensure areas and lawns along these streets:

– Are free of trash and debris
– Have properly maintained lawns with grass that is mowed and edged
– Feature trees and shrubs that are trimmed
– Showcase flowers, preferably perennials that will continue to bloom year after year
– Maintain sidewalks that free of snow and ice
– Feature festive holiday decorations

How to get involved:
The initiative will kick off with a Community Cleanup Saturday, June 17, 2017. Leaders want residents to form teams of neighbors, family members and/or community groups and adopt a block along Saginaw Street or Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue. The cleanup will take place from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. followed by a Community Celebration at Flint City Hall from 12:30-1:30 p.m. Residents interested in participating simply need to sign up and claim the block they want to adopt and spruce up. About the Mayor’s Beautification Awards:
These awards are designed to recognize and show appreciation for residents who have made an exceptional effort to maintain their property. If you receive a tax bill from the City of Flint you are eligible to participate. An anonymous group of residents will be selected to serve as judges to help identify winners of the 2017 Mayor’s Beautification Awards. Judging for the 2017 Mayor’s Beautification Awards will begin on Monday, June 5, 2017 and conclude Friday, September 15, 2017.

Awards will be presented to participants in all nine wards in the City of Flint. Multiple awards will be presented in each ward. Award categories include:  Most Attractive Home/Lawn, Most Improved Home/Lawn, Most Admired Home/Lawn:

City of Flint Flower:
As part of the 2017 Beautification Initiative, City leaders will designate an official City of Flint Flower. The Mayor is calling on Flint youth up to age 24 to submit suggestions which flower they think deserves the honor and why. Recommendations may be submitted in the forms of artwork or essays of up to 500 words. Submissions for the City of Flint Flower may be sent to Schuyler Davis at [email protected].
