Utilities Department Water Pollution Control Division Wastewater Plant Discharge Notification

FLINT, Mich. – The City of Flint Water Pollution Control Facility discharged wet-weather flows on March 7, 2026, at 8:20 a.m., consisting of a mixture of stormwater and partially treated sewage from its Wastewater Treatment Plant.
This discharge was due to excessive wet-weather flows (rainwater and stormwater entering the sewer system) that exceeded the plant’s capacity for full secondary treatment of sewage. The Wastewater Treatment Plant has a Retention and Treatment Basin to contain excess flows; however, it must discharge disinfected wastewater into the Flint River whenever the basin’s capacity and the plant’s treatment capacity are exceeded.
Notification of water sample test results will be posted on the State of Michigan website.
