Office of Public Health to host National Overdose Awareness Day event on City Hall Lawn

FLINT, Mich. – In recognition of National Overdose Awareness Day, observed on Sunday, August 31st, the Office of Public Health, in collaboration with the Genesee County Prevention Coalition (GCPC), will host an Overdose Awareness Event on Saturday, August 30th, from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM on the front lawn of Flint City Hall.

This free, public event will include participation from local organizations, access to community resources, and a series of powerful speakers who will share their experiences and insights.

Throughout the week, community members are encouraged to visit the Information Desk to submit the names of individuals they wish to honor—whether lost to overdose or saved through reversal efforts.

“Since 2021, Genesee County has experienced 3,296 overdose reversals and 985 overdose-related deaths. Of these, the City of Flint accounts for 2,253 reversals and 658 deaths,” City of Flint Public Health Manager Shebra Ward said.

“The impact of this epidemic on our community has been profound, and we remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting affected individuals and raising awareness through targeted, community-based initiatives.”

In tribute, a visual installation featuring purple flags (representing lives lost) and white flags (honoring lives saved) has been placed on the lawn to promote awareness and remembrance.

The City of Flint invites all residents to join us in this important effort to acknowledge the realities of overdose, reduce stigma, and promote healing within our community.
