It’s “Bag It!” Season in Flint — Let’s Keep Our City Clean and Beautiful!

FLINT, Mich. — Fall is here, and that means it’s time to Bag It! — Flint’s annual community-wide effort to keep our streets, yards, and waterways clean and ready for winter.

For more than a decade, the Bag It! Program has brought residents, city crews, and local partners together to collect leaves, clear our waterways, and turn yard waste into nutrient-rich compost.

Here’s how residents can join in:

Bag it: Scoop up those fall leaves and set them out with your regular trash and recycling on normal collection days.

Tag it: Make sure they’re out by your usual pickup day before the last week of November.

Snag it: Need bags? Swing by Flint City Hall’s Information Desk — or flag down your friendly NSO — they’ve got extra bags ready to share!

Starting Monday, November 10, City of Flint Street Maintenance crews will also begin cleaning leaves from the streets across all neighborhoods. Crews will continue until every area is clear and ready for the winter season.

Weekly yard waste pickup will continue through November 30 on residents’ normal waste collection day.

“It’s important to keep the streets clear of vehicles while the street leaf clean up is being provided,” said Donald Thompson, Transportation Director for the City of Flint. “This cleanup effort is the first step in preparing our city for the winter weather and plowing season.”

Residents are reminded not to rake or blow leaves into the street or storm drains. Those drains flow directly to our creeks and rivers, and yard waste can clog catch basins, cause street flooding, and harm aquatic life.

“Raking leaves into the street can clog our catch basins and cause dangerous street flooding,” said Jiggy Mitchell, Sewer System Maintenance Supervisor. “Those who rake leaves into the street are at risk of receiving a citation.”

Residents looking for an eco-friendly alternative can mulch their leaves into their lawn for natural fertilizer OR start a compost pile — great for gardens and flowers!

The City of Flint, along with Priority Waste, Genesee Conservation District, Keep Genesee County Beautiful, and the Flint River Watershed Coalition, is proud to support this important program every year.

Let’s show our Flint pride by Bagging It! together and keeping our city clean, green, and ready for winter.
