Fire Officials Show Off Department’s New Thermal Imaging Cameras

February 20, 2017 (FLINT, MI) — The City of Flint Fire Department has four new thermal imaging cameras thanks to a $5,200 grant from the 100 Club of Genesee, Shiawassee and Lapeer Counties. Thermal imaging cameras can detect emitted heat energy through a variety of filters including smoke and dust.

“Thermal imaging cameras can be used to see heat energy being released through a door or a wall which may indicate the presence of what we call hidden fires,” said fire chief Ray Barton.

“These cameras can assist our fire fighters with rescue procedures, so they will be a big benefit to this department.”

Prior to receiving the “100 Club Grant” Flint’s fire department only had one thermal imaging camera. Now, a camera will be placed on each fire engine.

Chief Barton and members of the Flint Fire Department displayed the items Monday morning at Fire Station #1. They demonstrated the camera’s effectiveness and how they will benefit the department and local residents. Officials also thanked the 100 Club of Genesee, Shiawassee and Lapeer Counties for supporting them and their continued efforts to provide a safer community for the people of Flint.
