FLINT, Mich. — The City of Flint and Flint Housing Commission will host a Demolition Ceremony for the Atherton East Apartments on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. at 3123 Chambers Street.
Built in the 1960s during Flint’s urban renewal era, Atherton East became unsafe due to its location in a flood zone and lack of resources. All residents were supported in relocating, either with housing vouchers or into the new 196-unit Clark Commons development.
“This step is about more than demolition — it’s about safety, dignity, and a stronger future for our families and neighborhoods,” said Mayor Sheldon Neeley.

The site will be converted into green space, reducing blight and improving neighborhood safety. The project is funded through the federal Choice Neighborhoods grant and private support from the C.S. Mott Foundation.
“Removing Atherton East is a critical step toward protecting our residents, eliminating long-standing community hazards, and setting the stage for a brighter future,” said David A. Northern Sr., CEO of the Flint Housing Commission. “Through our partnership with the City of Flint, HUD, and the C.S. Mott Foundation, we are taking responsible steps to ensure a safe, sustainable, and thriving community.”
