Flint Police Warn Residents of Water Filter Scam

January 12, 2016 — Flint, MI–  As City of Flint, County and State leaders work to provide resources to Flint residents affected by the ongoing water disaster, Flint Police Chief James Tolbert is warning people to watch out for those looking to take advantage of the situation.

“We have gotten reports about people selling water filters,” said Chief Tolbert. “Water filters are being provided at several places around the City of Flint for free. There is no need to purchase a filter from someone on the street,” he added.

Chief Tolbert is asking anyone who sees someone trying to sell filters to report it to police. “It is unconscionable that some residents would try to take advantage of others coping with this water situation. So, if you know of someone trying to sell a filter that they may have gotten for free, please let us know,” said Tolbert.

Local and State officials are urging Flint residents to get at least one water filter in their home. Filters, bottled water and water test kits are being provided to residents free of charge at Flint Fire stations as well as City Hall.

Residents with questions about how to obtain a water filter, replacement cartridge, and bottled water should call 211 for information.
