Sewer Department to conduct smoke testing in Evergreen Valley neighborhood on Saturday, May 30

The City of Flint Sewer Department will be conducting smoke testing in the Evergreen Valley area on Saturday, May 30. This testing is being performed to help identify improper connections to the sanitary sewer system during heavy rain events. These improper connections can contribute to major sewer overflows and flooding in the area.

During testing, smoke may be seen coming from catch basins, storm and sanitary manholes, plumbing vent stacks on homes, or any illicit connections tied into the sanitary sewer system. Staff may need to access private property to document sources of smoke.

The smoke used during testing is non-toxic, odorless, will not create stains, and dissipates quickly. Letters will be sent to all affected addresses prior to testing. Smoke will only enter a home if there is a dry trap or if a waste pipe on the property is not properly equipped with a trap. If smoke does enter a home, it should dissipate quickly.

Anyone with questions or concerns is encouraged to contact the Water Service Center at 810-766-7079.
