Mayor Neeley and City Council condemn violence, harassment, and bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

FLINT, Michigan — In a joint resolution, Mayor Sheldon Neeley and City Council condemned the violence, harassment, and acts of bias against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.

“At the City of Flint, we will continue to fight back against injustices at every level. Equal opportunity, inclusion, and dignity is a human right for all, and we will not tolerate racism in any form against any people,” Mayor Sheldon Neeley said. “The mass murder of Asian women in Atlanta shows us once again that the cancer of racism is continuing to plague our country and destroying lives. We must do better.”

City Council voted unanimously to pass the resolution that was introduced by Mayor Neeley. The resolution reaffirmed their commitment to combat racism, xenophobia, harassment, and all other forms of discrimination against Asian American and Pacific Islander people and communities.

The resolution adds to a series of other measures designed to help build equality in our community and beyond. Mayor Neeley helped form the Flint Community Advisory Task Force on Public Safety and worked cooperatively with City Council members to declare racism a public health crisis, implement a bias-crime reporting ordinance, and establish Juneteenth as a City of Flint official holiday.

Stop AAPI Hate, a nationwide coalition that documents and addresses anti-Asian hate and discrimination, reports that crimes and reports of bias-motivated harassment against the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities have increased during the pandemic.

Any suspected hate-based crime can be reported to the FBI by submitting an online tip at fbi.gov/tips or calling 1-800-CALL-FBI. In an emergency, call 911.
