Mayor, City, and Community Leaders Announce New City-wide Basketball League for Area Youth

 Flint, Mich— Flint City officials are pleased to announce the start of a new City-wide basketball league for local youth. The league is the result of a partnership between the City, Chris McLavish Basketball (CMB), ReCAST, Foss Avenue Baptist Church, and Cathedral of Faith Church. This will be the first official basketball league, run by the City of Flint, in more than 15 years.

“When I’m out in the community, people often comment that there isn’t enough for kids to do,” said Sean Croudy, Director of Community Recreation for the City of Flint. “Our goal is to provide our youth with a positive, fun activity in a safe environment. This league will not only teach youth about basketball, but also help build self-esteem, teach how to work with others as a team, and get kids to be more active.”

Participation in the City-wide Basketball league is free and open to kids from eight years old (third grade) to 17 years of age. Open registration is being held December 19, 20 and 21 at Cathedral of Faith located at 6031 Dupont St from 3:00-6:00 p.m.

“We are looking for both players and coaches,” said Croudy. “If there is a child who wants to play, we will place them with a team. Parents interested in getting their kids involved just need to sign them up, and there is no cost to participate.”

  Once registration concludes, organizers will put together the game schedule for the season. The basketball games will be held on Saturdays. Older kids will play in the gym at Cathedral of Faith, younger kids will play at Eagle’s Nest Academy. The first game is expected to take place Saturday, January 6, 2018.

“We want kids in our community to be active, involved, and exposed to a variety of activities and that is exactly what we expect this City-wide Basketball League to provide,” said Mayor Karen Weaver.
