Flint Reaches Historic Milestone: Final Active Lead Service Line Replaced

The City of Flint has completed the replacement of the final active lead service line identified through a federal settlement agreement marking the successful completion of one of the largest infrastructure projects in the city’s history.

With the completion of this final replacement, there are no active lead service lines remaining in the City of Flint.

Mayor Sheldon Neeley discussed this historic milestone during a press conference at Flint City Hall on Monday, August 3, where he highlighted the years-long effort to inspect approximately 31,930 residential and commercial addresses. Wherever lead or galvanized service lines were identified, they were replaced. At locations where property owners did not grant access or could not be located despite repeated outreach efforts, the service lines were permanently disconnected from the City’s water distribution system.

Although the replacement of active lead service lines is now complete, crews will continue final restoration work at locations affected by construction. That work is expected to conclude in August.

Of the approximately 31,930 addresses where excavation took place, EGLE identified the following:

–11,600 lines were replaced

–1,380 lines were ‘cut and capped’ (no longer connected to the water system)

–18,950 lines were found to be ‘copper to copper’ connections with no lead
