Flint, MI — January 10, 2016 — Flint Fire Stations will now serve as Water Resource Sites distributing bottled water, filters and test kits. All five Flint Fire Stations will be open Sunday, January 10 from 11am to 4pm. Flint residents and water customers are welcome to pick up free water filters, replacement cartridges, and bottled water. Flint Fire Stations will continue to provide supplies everyday, starting Monday, January 11 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Red Cross volunteers are serving in the stations making this operation possible.
This expansion is a joint effort between the City of Flint, Genesee County, and the State of Michigan to address the ongoing water emergency in Flint. Mayor Karen Weaver declared a State of Emergency for the City on Monday, December 14, 2015. In support of the move, Genesee County declared a State of Emergency on Monday, January 4, 2016. The State of Michigan followed with a declaration on Tuesday, January 5, 2016.
State and local officials are continuing to work to make the water safe again after elevated lead levels were reported in the water system throughout 2015. In October the City switched back to the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department as its water source, following with additional corrosion control additives in December. It will require more time and effort before the water is safe to drink again. Until that time, residents and water customers are urged to continue using water filters and bottled water.
Residents can also get water filters at Flint City Hall, Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. Both Brita and Pur filters and their replacement cartridges are available. Zero brand water pitchers are also now available. The pitchers are a good option for individuals having difficulty affixing the filters to their faucets. Flint residents are also urged to utilize the water test kits being provided. Their water needs to be tested in order for all affected areas to be identified so the amount of funding needed to address the problem can be determined.
Residents with questions about how to obtain a water filter, replacement cartridge, and bottled water should call 211 for information.
