City of Flint Reminds Residents to Celebrate Safely and Follow Fireworks Ordinance This Independence Day

As Independence Day celebrations begin, the City of Flint is reminding residents to celebrate responsibly by following the City’s fireworks ordinance and practicing safe fireworks use to help protect neighborhoods, families, pets and first responders.

Consumer fireworks are permitted within the City of Flint June 29 through July 4 between the hours of 11:00 a.m. and 11:45 p.m.

Residents are reminded that fireworks may only be discharged on private property with the property owner’s permission. Fireworks are not permitted on public streets, sidewalks, parks, schools, churches or other public property. The discharge of fireworks is also prohibited between 12:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m.

Violations of the City’s fireworks ordinance may result in fines of up to $500 and the seizure of fireworks. The City also encourages residents to take simple safety precautions while celebrating:

  • Keep a bucket of water or garden hose nearby.
  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.
  • Keep pets safely indoors during fireworks displays.
  • Dispose of fireworks properly and clean up debris after use.
  • Be considerate of neighbors, veterans, older adults and individuals with sensory sensitivities.

“Independence Day is a time for our community to come together and celebrate,” said Mayor Sheldon A. Neeley. “We encourage everyone to enjoy the holiday responsibly by following the law, respecting their neighbors and making safety a priority. Working together helps ensure everyone has a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.”

Residents are encouraged to report illegal fireworks activity through the appropriate non-emergency channels. Emergencies should always be reported by calling 911.
