City of Flint celebrates Pride Month with proclamation by Mayor Neeley

Mayor Neeley issued the following proclamation honoring Pride Month for the duration of his current term as mayor.

Proclamation

WHEREAS, the City of Flint supports civil rights, freedom, and equality for all people, including many citizens of diverse LGBTQ+ identities as well as friends and allies; and

WHEREAS, June 28, 2023 marks the 54^th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, largely recognized as the catalyst for the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement, where the first stone was thrown by Marsha P. Johnson, a trans black woman; and

Whereas, the month of June has been designated as LGBTQ+ Pride Month to promote solidarity for the Flint community in the fight to secure equity for all identities, genders, races, ethnicities, and ages; and

WHEREAS, there is still work to be done to combat discrimination and prejudice toward the LGBTQ+ community, especially in the workplace, housing, and healthcare across the United States; and

WHEREAS, LGBTQ+ youth are more susceptible to suicide, homelessness, bullying, and violence;

WHEREAS, discrimination against any one person infringes upon all of our constitutional rights chipping away at our collective character and integrity; and

NOW, THEREFORE, I

Sheldon A. Neeley, Mayor of the City of Flint on this 8^th day of June in the year 2023 do hereby proclaim June 2023, June 2024, June 2025, and June 2026 as

PRIDE MONTH

in recognition of the innate human value and equal protection by law of the LGBTQ+ community in the City of Flint, and as a commitment to continuing to build a community and country that promote diversity, love, and respect for all people.
