Building & Safety Inspections Division: Protecting Flint residents

The Building & Safety Inspections Division (BSI) plays a vital role in fulfilling the City of Flint’s commitment to protecting the health and safety of Flint residents, especially in the winter months.

Landlords are required to provide heat to tenants October 1-March 31. Landlords must comply with the City of Flint’s rental ordinance, which BSI works to enforce, often based on complaints. Rental concerns can be directed to the Building & Safety Inspections Division at 810-766-7284, Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.

The City’s rental inspections program protects tenants who make up almost 50% of Flint’s residents. Landlords are responsible to ensure a safe environment for their tenants. This includes ensuring that electrical, mechanical, plumbing, and building systems are properly maintained, as well as health and safety protections like working smoke alarms, removable bars on egress points (if there are bars present), and the absence mold, insects, or rodents.
