Bids in review to manufacture recycling and trash carts

The City of Flint is in the process of reviewing bids and selecting a vendor to manufacture state-of-the-art trash and recycling carts.

The City of Flint received a donation of high-quality plastic resin from Dow Chemical, valued at $900,000, that the cart manufacturer must use to ensure that the carts are very durable. This is a major investment in our community, and we expect these trash and recycling carts to last 10 years or more.

The City will present a vendor to the Flint City Council for approval this Spring. After the Flint City Council approves a vendor, we will be able to provide a timeline for the carts to be manufactured and delivered to residents. We fully expect the carts to be distributed to all residential households in 2024.

The City’s grant-funded recycling initiative includes outreach and education activities for residents. Residents can expect to receive direct communications from the City about the new trash and recycling carts and waste services in the coming months.

The Flint City Council approved a contract extension for Priority Waste in November 2023, locking in a rate freeze through 2028. This ensures that the City of Flint can implement this state-of-the-art recycling initiative, and Flint residents can look forward to the stability of high-quality service at no increased cost.

The extended contract includes all of the same services Priority Waste previously delivered, in addition to carted recycling and trash pickup. Priority Waste will continue to collect trash bags, bulk items, and trash in additional cans at the curb, alongside the provided carts. Yard waste/compost collection begins in Flint this week.
