The City of Flint administration is aware of the statement issued by the Flint Police Officers’ Association (FPOA) and share their concerns.
The Administration reaffirms its full support for the brave men and women of the Flint Police Department who work every day to uphold the law, protect public safety, and serve our residents with professionalism and integrity, even under difficult and often politicized conditions. City officials understand that law enforcement carrying out their duties should not be politicized and are necessary for a peaceful and orderly society. Therefore, the Administration stands in solidarity with the FPOA in calling for all elected officials to rise above political conflict and focus on the well-being of Flint residents.
Additionally, recent demonstrations and actions during City Council meetings in the City of Flint have included a troubling pattern of inflammatory behavior that goes far beyond the bounds of a peaceful expression of any grievances. Flint police officers have faced deliberate and antagonistic behavior from demonstrators, sowing seeds of discourse and discontent, while they are trying to maintain public peace. These actions have included verbal threats, physical obstruction, disorderly conduct, and attempts to intimidate public officials and city workers. Law enforcement officials have also confirmed that several of the organizers of the demonstrations and participants are not Flint residents, but rather individuals with a documented history of disrupting local government meetings not only in Flint but in cities in other states as well.
“The safety of our residents, employees, and elected officials must remain paramount,” said Mayor Sheldon Neeley. “We will continue to promote civic engagement while also working to protect those who are targeted for simply doing their jobs.”
Despite ongoing challenges, Mayor Neeley and city leadership remain committed to the core priorities of Flint’s future: youth employment, public safety, infrastructure investment, and long-term financial stability.
Violence, harassment, or intimidation—regardless of origin—will not be tolerated in the City of Flint.
