Mayor Neeley Calls for Responsible Communication as Flint Awaits Court-Directed Settlement Funds

FLINT, Mich. — Mayor Sheldon Neeley is urging accuracy and responsibility in public communication surrounding the Flint Water Settlement, following the circulation of less than accurate statements suggesting new developments in the case.

Despite recent public claims, neither the Special Master nor the U.S. District Court has provided any definitive release date for settlement payments to residents, other than referencing “late summer or early fall” in a letter sent to the City of Flint administration in response to a request for information.

“Releasing speculative information only adds to residents’ pain and frustration,” said Mayor Sheldon Neeley. “The people of Flint have already endured enough. They deserve honesty, transparency, and leadership rooted in facts — not politics.”

Mayor Neeley continues to be an active voice for Flint families in pursuit of justice. On September 25, 2025, he met with the Special Master in Washington, D.C., to urge the release of these long-overdue funds. He also met with representatives at the White House to continue pushing for the timely distribution of settlement dollars.

Following those discussions, the Special Master confirmed that administrative progress continues, including the migration of the settlement webpage to a new payment portal that will make accurate information more easily accessible to residents. The updated site includes a summary of settlement parameters, court items, FAQs, and scam warnings. Local library staff have also volunteered to assist residents in navigating the new system once it becomes publicly available.

“We want to thank our partners at the state and federal levels who continue to support our advocacy efforts to move this process forward,” said Mayor Neeley. “We will keep pressing every federal and judicial channel until these settlement dollars reach the people they were meant to serve. It’s critical that we communicate responsibly — because every false rumor sets our community back.”
