Expanding In-Home Plumbing Program; Council Advances Partial Funding

FLINT, MI — The City of Flint continues to prioritize the health and safety of its residents by working to expand its In-Home Plumbing Program, aimed at eliminating lead hazards and improving water infrastructure within homes. On June 18, two key resolutions were presented to the Flint City Council to support this expansion through a combination of federal grant funding and American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars.

The Council voted to advance a resolution allocating $490,000 in grant funds to the full body for final approval, marking a significant step forward in funding critical in-home plumbing improvements. However, a companion resolution proposing a reallocation of ARPA funds not to exceed $510,000 as matching funds for the program was held in committee and has not yet been advanced.

“This program directly supports Flint families by providing real, in-home solutions—replacing outdated pipes, faucets, and water heaters with safe, lead-free components,” said Ed Taylor. “We are grateful for the progress made with the grant funding and will continue urging full council action on the ARPA match so that we can deliver maximum impact to our residents.”

The Flint In-Home Plumbing Program will provide:

• Home plumbing inspections
• Total pipe replacement for eligible residences
• Outreach and education to prevent exposure
