Biweekly Public Safety update: August 23, 2021

This biweekly update includes information related to the Declaration of State of Emergency Due to Gun Violence, corresponding Executive Orders and public safety from police and fire departments.

Declaration of State of Emergency Due to Gun Violence & Executive Orders
Flint City lockup reopened
The Flint Police Department along with Michigan State Police, the University of Michigan-Flint Department of Public Safety and Mott Community College Department of Public Safety will use the facility. This is another tool to address crime in the City of Flint by providing up to 72 hours hold for those who have been arrested.
The City lockup did have activity over the weekend.

Genesee County Requests
• A request has been made to the Genesee County Sheriff to patrol City of Flint parks at dusk as an added safety measure to combat crime. The City of Flint has 70 recreational facilities such as mini parks, neighborhood parks, community parks, large urban parks and trails.

• A request has been made to Genesee County Parks for assistance with adding gates to the entrances Broome, Brennan and Cook parks.

Police mini stations
Police mini stations being renovated for reactivation.
• Dort Mall mini station renovations have been completed.
• Midway Townhomes mini station renovations have been completed with police officers at that location.
• University and Chevrolet mini station renovations have been completed.
• Bishop Ave and MLK King mini station renovations underway.

Public Safety
Flint Police Department
• There are six (6) new recruits in the police academy.
• Police officers are in the final stages of training to use the helicopter. All training and helicopter prepping will be completed by the end of August.
