Flint Fire Department Deputy Chief Carrie Edwards-Clemons selected for executive development program

FLINT, Michigan —  Flint Fire Department Deputy Chief Carrie Edwards-Clemons has been accepted into the 2021 Fire Service Executive Development Institute (FSEDI). FSEDI is a program developed by the IAFC and funded by a grant from Motorola Solutions Foundation to provide new and aspiring chiefs with the tools they need to have a successful and productive tenure.

“Securing a seat in FSEDI is quite an accomplishment,” Edwards-Clemons said. “This program will prepare me for future career advancement while giving me the leadership skills to excel in my current position as Deputy Chief. I look forward to gaining new skills to bring back to and advance my community.”

Currently, Carrie serves as President of the International Association of Black Professional Firefighters and has held positions in IAFF Local 352. In addition, she coordinates a variety of safety initiatives and summer programs providing fire prevention and education activities to the community.

“Carrie exhibits the leadership qualities necessary to move the Flint Fire Department forward today and into the future,” said Chief Barton. “I am grateful that the IAFC will assist with the enhancement of her leadership abilities and provide additional tools to further her career as a fire service leader through the Fire Service Executive Development Institute.”

The Fire Service Executive Development Institute “is a year-long leadership-development program created and implemented by the IAFC to provide new and aspiring chiefs with the tools they need to have successful and productive tenures.  The members of the cohort will meet virtually until they are allowed in-person sessions. The group will communicate between sessions using an online community,” according to its website.

Deputy Chief Edwards-Clemons attended Jackson State University and then went on to earn a B.A. from the University of Michigan and an M.B.A/Public Administration from Columbia Southern University.
