Flint crews continue working hard to clean streets after large snowfall

FLINT, Michigan — City of Flint crews continue to be hard at work to clear roads today. The City of Flint remains under a snow emergency until 10 p.m. today, February 16, 2021.

The National Weather Service is reporting that the overnight storm dumped 9.4 inches of snow on the City of Flint. Crews have been working around the clock to clear roadways. Keeping major roads passable has been the primary focus so far, said Transportation Director John Daly. He said crews likely will be able to begin shifting service to local roads and neighborhood streets this afternoon.

The City of Flint has more than 500 miles of roadway, including 152.33 miles of major streets, 355.85 miles of local streets, and 33 bridges. As always, the City of Flint will follow its Snow and Ice Control Plan to ensure major roads are serviced first. The Snow and Ice Control Plan was updated in 2020 by Daly to provide efficient and effective service to the residents of the City of Flint.

Generally, it takes 36 hours to conduct full snow removal operations in the City, Daly said. With large snowfalls like today’s, it can take longer. Daly hopes to finish service to local roads tomorrow from this large snowfall.

“This snowfall was exceptionally large,” Daly said. “Our workers hit the streets early and were able to keep major roads passable throughout the storm. With a storm of this magnitude, it often takes several days to fully recover, but we are on the right track and continue to work hard to get the roads cleared.”

Major streets are cleared first because they support higher volumes of traffic, Daly explained.

Residents are reminded that during the snow emergency, which is set to continue until 10 p.m. today, parking on city streets is prohibited to allow crews access to properly serve city streets.

“I applaud the men and women who are continuing to work tirelessly to help our city cleanup,” Mayor Sheldon Neeley said. “We are working hard and doing a fantastic job clearing streets. We thank residents for their cooperation as we work day and night to get our streets plowed.”
