Water Meter Replacement Program

In an effort to better serve our customers The City of Flint is starting a water meter replacement program. The City of Flint has contracted with Metron-Farnier and H2O Utility Services to provide and install your new water meter.  The installers from H2O will be wearing company uniform shirts and a City of Flint issued identification badge. These employees WILL NOT accept any money and there is no cost to you for getting a new water meter. Anyone who is asked to pay or is billed for the work should call 810-766-7470 ext. 2104.

The old meter will be replaced with a new one piece state of the art water meter. There are no wires or separate transponders needed to allow remote reading of your new water meter. The new meters will ensure many years of trouble-free service, eliminate estimated reads and provide accurate readings.

Work began the week of July 27, 2015.  Meters will be replaced Mondays through Fridays between 8am-4pm.  There will be a limited number of evening and Saturday appointments available. If you are home during the designated times, make sure the area around the existing water meter is clear of debris and allow approximately 30 minutes of time for the installer to complete their work.

If you missed the installer please contact H2O Utility Services at 1-800-634-7551 and schedule an appointment. We will do our best to accommodate every schedule.  Should you have any questions regarding this project please refer to our Frequently Asked Questions below.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

  • Why do we need a new meter?

The City of Flint is updating its remote meter reading system and is replacing a large quantity of meters where the transponder battery has failed or is expected to fail at any time. If your meter has been changed in the last couple of years you will not need a new meter.

  • When will the water meter and/or device be installed?

If your meter needs to be replaced, you will receive a letter from the City of Flint.

  • How do I know the installers are legitimate?

A private contractor, H2O Utility Services has been contracted to install the meters. Each installer will be uniformed and carry identification. Their vehicle will have a decal affixed showing the company name, location and phone number. INSTALLERS WILL NOT ASK YOU FOR PAYMENT. You may also call H2O Utility Services at 1-800-634-7551 to confirm the identity of the installer.

  • How long will it take to install the new meter?

Normal installation is ½ hour or less.

  • Who will maintain the new meter?

Barring negligence on the part of the customer/home owner, the City of Flint has responsibility for maintaining the new water meter.

  • Is there any cost to me?

There is no cost to the homeowner for the meter. Under no circumstances should you pay anyone for the equipment or the labor. However, it is the property owner’s responsibility to maintain the plumbing. Should the installer arrive and find the pipes are in questionable condition, the meter will not be installed until the plumbing has been repaired at the property owner’s expense.

  • Is there anything I can do to make the installation go smoother?

If you find a notice on the door please call the number listed and make an appointment. Clean and clear the area around your present meter to allow the installer easy access to complete the installation.
