Mayor joins Morris Peterson Jr. Foundation to Announce 1st Annual Spring Break Week of Events for Local Kids

(February 13, 2018) Flint, Mich– The Morris Peterson Jr. Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Genesee County, the Boys & Girls Club of Flint, and Mott Community College are launching the first annual MPJF Spring Break and “A Night at the Theatre!”

The Spring Break event will take place Monday, April 2, through Friday, April 6. More than 200 Flint-area youth, ages 4-17, will participate in a week-long structured, physical and confidence building program at the Boys & Girls Club and Mott Community College. Programming will focus on leadership development and teamwork through various classes and guest speakers, with specialized programming provided by Step Afrika!

On Friday, April 6, to close out the week of activities, Step Afrika! will perform at the newly renovated Capitol Theatre in downtown Flint for “A Night at the Theatre!”

Step Afrika! is the first professional dance company dedicated to the tradition of stepping. The troupe recently performed off-Broadway at the New Victory Theater in New York City.

“Step Afrika! is tremendously honored to perform in Flint at the historic Capitol Theatre. We are truly grateful for the work of the Morris Peterson Jr. Foundation and the exceptional congeniality of the many community partners working tirelessly to ensure a worthwhile and meaningful experience for the Flint community. On behalf of the board of directors, staff, and incredible artists of Step Afrika!, thank you very much for allowing us to be a part of this momentous occasion. Until April 6!,” commented C. Brian Williams, Founder and Executive Director, Step Afrika!

“We’re just trying to do what we can to give kids in the community different experiences. Most of them would be sitting around the house since they have the week off from school. These kids, and this community, have endured a lot. We just want to give back however we can,” said Morris Peterson Jr., Founder and President, Morris Peterson Jr. Foundation.
