GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Supervises and participates in the maintenance, repair and overhaul of automotive and/or construction equipment and accessories; performs related work as required.
 
SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the supervision of administrative employee of higher rank who reviews the work through discussion and/or the review of reports.
 
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Exercises working supervision over a small number of employees engaged in vehicle maintenance activities and auxiliary services.
 
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Supervises and participates in an automotive and related equipment basic preventive maintenance program on an assigned shift; enforces appropriate safety regulations.
2. Inspects automotive, construction, diesel and related equipment for needed repairs; diagnoses and determines the amount of repair necessary; estimates costs; requisitions parts.
3. Plans, lays out and assigns repair and servicing jobs and subordinates participating in repair and testing work; certifies time for completion of same.
4. Inspects jobs in process and at completion for proper adjustments, repairs and replacements.
5. Keeps records, initiates requisitions, and makes reports as required.
6. Supervises the receiving, inspection, and preparation of new motor vehicles and equipment.
7. Supervises the reconditioning of old cars and equipment for sale.
8. Assures security of the DPW Ann Arbor Street Yards.
 
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
1. Three (3) years of full-time paid work experience as a Truck and Heavy Equipment Mechanic , performing motor vehicle servicing and repair work;
2. Preferably including experience with diesel power and construction equipment. Prescribed experience as journeyman automotive mechanic preferred.
3. Considerable familiarity with tools and equipment used in servicing and repair of motor vehicles.
4. Considerable knowledge of and skill in using standard tools and equipment used in motor vehicle repair.
5. Considerable knowledge of operating principles of internal combustion engines and other mechanical components of motor vehicles.
6. Ability to plan, assign, and supervise the work of employees.
7. Ability to estimate the man-hours, technique, tools, materials, and equipment required to complete or repair a maintenance project.
8. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
9. Ability to maintain records and make reports.
 
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Possession of a valid State of Michigan driver's license.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, feel or operate objects, tools or controls The employee is also frequently required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
