Mayor Walling among bipartisan leaders honored on issues related to national service

WASHINGTON – Tomorrow, Mayor Dayne Walling of Flint, Michigan will be recognized for his support for national service at the 11th Annual Friends of National Service Awards reception hosted by Voices for National Service in Washington, DC. Walling will receive the Local Leadership Award for his leadership and innovation in leveraging national service to meet local needs.

“Under Mayor Walling’s passionate leadership, the people of Flint have banded together to tackle common challenges, including blight and crime,” said AnnMaura Connolly, President of Voices for National Service. “Flint is a shining example of the improvements a service culture can bring to a struggling city, and Mayor Walling is a testament to the catalyzing impact a forward-thinking leader can ignite.”

An AmeriCorps alumnus, Walling launched the Love Your Block initiative, a beautification campaign based on a volunteering blueprint launched by the Cities of Service coalition. After a successful launch year in which over 2 million pounds of trash were removed from Flint neighborhoods by volunteers, the program has expanded and is now affectionately known as the Love Your City campaign.

“Receiving this award is a great honor and a testament to our Flint citizens,” said Walling. “The value of service was instilled in me through my experience as an AmeriCorps member. I understand the impact service has both on those who are served and also those who serve, and am committed to making service and volunteering essential components of Flint’s plan for tackling some of our greatest challenges through initiatives such as Love Your City and the Blue Badge Volunteer Corps.”

National service addresses critical issues in communities across the country by providing the human capital needed to support education and health care initiatives, coordinate disaster relief and prevention, and enable senior independence. For every taxpayer dollar invested in national service, there are returns to society of $3.95 in terms of higher earnings, more output, and other community-wide benefits, according to a report released by Voices for National Service.
