Traffic Engineering
The Traffic Engineering Division's principal responsibility
involves the design, construction, maintenance, and historical archiving
of all Traffic Signals, Traffic Signs and Pavement Markings within the
City of Flint.
Secondary functions include issuing permits for all street closures
(construction, parade, road race, motorcade, marches, block parties,
etc.), removing parking enforcement for special events/occasions, and
investigating requests for additional street lighting.
Along with these listed activities, Traffic Engineering is involved in
the design and coordination of every organized function that takes place
on the public right-of-way.

24-hour automated volume counts on Major streets

installs, repairs
or replaces over 3,000 Regulatory/Warning signs (including over 900
STOP signs

effects over 1,000
traffic signal maintenance repairs
oversees two complete repaintings of every longline pavement marking
citywide Signal and Roadway design

applies
thermoplastic crosswalks and stop bars to 1/3 of the City's
signalized intersections and 38 separate school crossing areas
-
performs over 100
peak-hour intersection turning movement studies
-
investigates and
replies to over 500 complaints/requests from Admin/Council/citizens
-
performs and
tabulates the annual citywide streetlight audit
-
provides traffic
control services (materials/labor/design) for over 150 construction
projects and special events

sets up and
maintains every work zone for the Water Dept:, Sewer Dept., and
Street Maintenance Division

provides oversight
for all City electrical projects

- Asset
Management Council Road Survey -
Beginning in 2003, GLS Region V staff along with
representatives of the Genesee County Road Commission (GCRC) and
the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) assessed the
condition of Genesee County federal aid eligible roads using the
PASER road rating system as requested by the State of Michigan
Asset Management Council.
