FAQ's


1. How do I apply to the Flint Police Department?
Applications are available only at the City of Flint Department of Human Resources .

2. How do I find out when the Flint Police Department is hiring?
The City of Flint Department of Human Resources advertises in The Flint Journal, Sunday Classifieds, notifies a variety of agencies and educational institutions of the recruitment, and posts a job announcement on the City’s website. If you have email, you may also place yourself on a notification list for any open recruitments.

4. Is the City of Flint currently accepting applications?
Yes. The City of Flint Department of Human Resources is accepting applications for:

Police Officer Recruit and Police Officer on a CONTINUOUS basis.

5. Where is the Department of Human Resources located?
The Department of Human Resources (or Personnel Office) is located in the basement of the City of Flint Municipal Center, 1101 South Saginaw Street,
Room 9, Flint, Michigan 48502.

6. What documents must be provided prior to receiving an application packet for
Police Officer Recruit?

You will need to provide the original AND two (2) copies of:

- Passing score on MCOLES Reading/Writing Test
- Passing score on MCOLES Physical Agility Test dated after August 2005 or within six (6) months of the next academy in February 2006.
- Valid Driver’s License (Valid Michigan Driver’s License is required upon
appointment to the position)
- High School Diploma
- Equivalent to two (2) full-time semesters at a community college or university (24 credit hours); (Education equivalent to an Associate’s degree is preferred);
                                      -OR-
- Two (2) years full-time paid work experience in law enforcement;
                                      -OR-
- Proof of active military status or honorable discharge.

7. Is there an age requirement for Police Officer Recruit?
Yes. You must be twenty-one (21) years of age inclusive on the date of
application. Applicants for Police Officer Recruit can apply who are within six months of the minimum age on the date of the application. An applicant may compete in the examination, but may not be appointed to a position in the classified service prior to the attainment of the minimum age.

8. What documents must be provided prior to receiving an application packet for
Police Officer?

You must provide the original AND two (2) copies of:

Valid Driver’s License (Valid Michigan Driver’s License is required upon appointment to the position)

Proof of Academy (Certifiable);
                -OR-
Proof of Certification (Certified)

9. Is there an age requirement for Police Officer?
Yes. You must be twenty-one (21) years of age inclusive on date of application. Applicants who will attain minimum age within three (3) calendar months following date of examination shall be deemed acceptable)

10. What if I am applying from out of state?
Application packets may be sent to individuals from out of state; however, they must provide proof of the minimum requirements listed above in order to receive the packet.

11. Am I automatically considered for hire upon presenting these documents?
No. When your documents are submitted and verified, proving that you meet the minimum entrance requirements for the position, you will be given an application packet, which consists of:

An Employment Application
EEO (Equal Opportunity) Statement
Authorization Release Form
Background Booklet

“YOU MUST COMPLETE AND RETURN THE ORIGINALS PLUS ONE (1) COPY OF THESE
DOCUMENTS AND (2) PICTURES TO THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMAN RESOURCES in order to be considered for employment.


12. What types of pictures are acceptable?
The pictures may be Polaroid, 35MM or digital, and must include: (1) close up (head to shoulders), AND (1) full (head to toe). The pictures should have a white background; no jewelry in ears or visible chains. Please ensure that there is no one in the background of the pictures and the pictures are professional in nature. Both male and female applicants must wear appropriate business attire, specifically, dress slacks, shirt with tie, dress or skirt (appropriate length) and blouse.

13. What is “MCOLES”?
The Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards (MCOLES) is the state agency that sets employment standards for persons entering law enforcement in Michigan.

14. How do I obtain information about MCOLES Reading/Writing and Physical
Agility tests?

Information about MCOLES pre-enrollment testing is available online at:
www.mcoles.org. Information regarding test sites and schedules is also available at the Department
of Human Resources.


15. Does the Department of Human Resources conduct the MCOLES testing?
No. The MCOLES testing is administered by MCOLES at approved testing sites.

16. Is there a fee for testing?
Reading and Writing Test $60.00
Physical Agility Test $45.00
NOTE: These prices reflect the current information available on the State of Michigan website.
The City of Flint is not responsible for any change to this information now or in the future.

17. How long are the tests valid?
The Reading and Writing Test results do not expire; you may re-take the test at any time. The
Physical Agility Test is only valid for six months. NOTE: You are responsible for maintaining an updated Physical Agility Test in order to be considered for employment.

18. What happens after I submit my completed application packet?
A copy of your application packet is submitted to the Flint Police Department for an initial background investigation. You will be notified by mail whether you passed or failed the background. Those individuals passing the initial background investigation will be scheduled for an oral examination. Those individuals failing the background investigation will be disqualified from further participation and consideration in the recruitment process.

19. When does the Academy start?
The Flint Police Academy runs their academy twice a year, February and August.
