How do I make a complaint?
|
|
A. Most complaints can be made by telephone, 24
hours a day by calling (810) 237-6870. If you are in immediate need of a police officer,
dial 9-1-1 and a car will be dispatched to your location. Certain crimes, such as assaults
using weapons, serious sexual assaults, or robberies, must be reported to a police
officer, either by calling 9-1-1 or by coming to the department. All stolen vehicle
complaints MUST be made personally by the registered owner. If you have proof of
ownership, such as the title or registration, and are calling from inside the City of
Flint, you can dial 9-1-1 and a car will be dispatched to take your complaint. Otherwise
you will need to come to the police department and make the complaint in person. You will
be asked to provide valid identification and to sign the complaint.

My house has been broken into. How do I go
about getting a Technician out to dust it for fingerprints?
|
| All
burglary complaints are assigned to a detective in the Criminal Investigations
Bureau, usually by 10:00 a.m. the day following a break-in. Contact the Record
Section, (810) 237-6870 and they will look up the detective that has been
assigned to your case. The investigator will determine whether or not a
Technician will be sent out. If possible, have a complete list of items missing,
including serial numbers. Also, provide the detective with names of possible
suspects. If you wish to secure your home or business, feel free to do so. If
there is broken glass or other items that had possibly been handled by the
burglar, try to preserve the evidence for possible future fingerprinting & set
aside. Notify your investigator of this possible evidence. |
| Does the
police department do fingerprinting, and when can I have my fingerprints done?
|
| Yes.
Fingerprinting is done on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:00 a.m. until
6:00 p.m. There is a $10.00 fee and, in most cases, you must bring your own
fingerprint card with you. Have it completely filled out in black ink and have a
valid picture I.D. NOTE: Fingerprinting of prisoners may take priority so that
we can get the officers back out into the streets, so there may be a short wait.
You may even be asked to come back at a later time |
| Can I have
the police department check someone else to see if they have a record, or see if
there is a warrant? |
|
Absolutely not. Michigan State Law absolutely
prohibits the police department from sharing information obtained from the
National NCIC
computer system with anyone other than law enforcement personnel. The department could be
fined or lose its terminal for violations of these regulations. You may run a record check
on yourself, providing you have a valid picture I.D. |
|
What if I have a question about the status of my
case?
|
|
Cases involving criminal acts which appear to
have some basis of solvability, are referred to a detective for further
investigation. To inquire about your case, call the Criminal Investigations
Bureau at (810) 237-6905. |
|
Can the police open my car if I have locked my keys
inside?
|
|
Due to the potential for damage to some
vehicles, the police department does not open locked vehicles. A locksmith is
your best alternative. If a child is locked inside your vehicle, the police
department will send a rescue unit to remove the child from the vehicle, possibly by
breaking a window. |
|
Someone has abandoned a junk car in my parking lot or
on my property. Can the police tow it away for me?
|
|
The police department can only have vehicles towed that
are on public property. Call a wrecker service in your area and the vehicle will
be towed away at no cost to you. The wrecker service will notify the owner once
they have determined who that may be.

when I go hunting?
|
|
Not necessarily. If you are in
possession of a valid hunting license, you may carry a handgun on your person
providing you do not conceal it. You may carry a handgun while hunting on the
OUTSIDE of your clothing. If inclement weather necessitates having the handgun
inside your clothing and concealed, you will need to have a CCW permit, or you will be in violation of state law. Unless you are in
possession of a General or Restricted CCW permit, you must transport your gun, unloaded,
in the trunk of your vehicle and keep the ammunition in a separate location, possibly in
the glove compartment. When applying for a General CCW permit, you will also be required
to have a gun Safety Certificate completed by an authorized firearms instructor, or a
police officer.
