How do I make a complaint?
Most complaints can be
made by telephone, 24 hours a day by calling (810) 237-6870. If you are in
immediate need of a police officer, dial 9-1-1 and a car will be
dispatched to your location. Certain crimes, such as assaults using weapons,
serious sexual assaults, or robberies, must be reported to a police officer,
either by calling 9-1-1 or by coming to the department. All stolen vehicle
complaints MUST be made personally by the registered owner. If you have
proof of ownership, such as the title or registration, and are calling from
inside the City of Flint, you can dial 9-1-1 and a car will be dispatched to
take your complaint. Otherwise you will need to come to the police
department and make the complaint in person. You will be asked to provide
valid identification and to sign the complaint.
Can I have the police department check someone else to see if they have a
record, or see if there is a warrant?
Absolutely not. Michigan State Law absolutely prohibits the police
department from sharing information obtained from the National NCIC computer
system with anyone other than law enforcement personnel. The department
could be fined or lose its terminal for violations of these regulations. You
may run a record check on yourself, providing you have a valid picture I.D.
WE NO LONGER DO CRIMINAL HISTORY RECORD CHECKS FOR ANYONE OTHER
THAN FOR ANOTHER POLICE AGENCY. WE REFER THE CUSTOMER TO EITHER THE CITY OF
FLINT LAW DEPARTMENT TO SUBMIT A FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT REQUEST FOR THE
INFORMATION THEY NEED OR TO A STATE SPONSORED WEBSITE WHERE CRIMINAL HISTORY
CHECKS ARE PROVIDED FOR A FEE.
What if I have a question about the status of my case?
Cases involving criminal acts, which appear to have some basis of
solvability, are referred to a detective for further investigation. To
inquire about your case, call the Criminal Investigations Bureau at (810)
237-6900.
Can the police open my car if I have locked my keys inside?
Due to the potential for damage to some vehicles, the police department does
not open locked vehicles. A locksmith is your best alternative.
If a child is locked inside your vehicle, the police department will send a
rescue unit to remove the child from the vehicle, possibly by breaking a
window.
Can I get a Car towed from in front of my house?
The police
department can only have vehicles towed that are on public property. Call a
wrecker service in your area and the vehicle will be towed away at no cost
to you. The wrecker service will notify the owner once they have determined
who that may be.
How can I find out if someone is in jail.
Contact the Genesee County Jail at (810) 257-3426.
How do I get a copy of a police report?

Not necessarily. If you are in possession of a valid hunting license, you
may carry a handgun on your person providing you do not conceal it. You may
carry a handgun while hunting on the OUTSIDE of your clothing. If inclement
weather necessitates having the handgun inside your clothing and concealed,
you will need to have a CCW permit, or you will be in violation of state
law. Unless you are in possession of a General or Restricted CCW permit, you
must transport your gun, unloaded, in the trunk of your vehicle and keep the
ammunition in a separate location, possibly in the glove compartment. When
applying for a General CCW permit, you will also be required to have a gun
Safety Certificate completed by an authorized firearms instructor, or a
police officer
How do I go about getting a purchase permit to buy a gun?
There is a $5.00 charge at the time of application. You will need a valid
picture I.D. There is a 24-hour wait while your record is being checked. In
most cases you will be able to pick up your purchase permit the next day.
Prior felony arrest disposition checks may take longer. If you have been
convicted of a felony or have shown a propensity for violence or assaultive
behavior, your permit application may be denied. The fee is not refundable.
PER STATE STATUTE, WE ARE
NO LONGER PERMITTED TO CHARGE THE $5.00 FEE FOR THE PROCESSING OF A PURCHASE
PERMIT. WE ARE, HOWEVER, ALLOWED TO CHARGE A $2.00 FEE FOR THE NOTARY
